Does the infection control community need to develop any new disinfectants specifically for this coronavirus?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">James Clayton: The SARS-CoV-2 virus belongs to a family of viruses that have a lipid envelope <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">on the outside of their structure. Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is fragile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0envelop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0is expected to make the virus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">highly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">susceptible to disinfectants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, just like cousins of the virus such as MERS and SARS.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We do not expect any new chemistries are needed and this will be confirmed once data is generated on SARS-CoV-2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">; PDI could be one of the first companies with data on the novel virus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong>Q. What is the difference between household cleaners and PDI\u2019s hospital-grade disinfectants?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">James Clayton: PDI\u2019s <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ospital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0grade disinfectants are designed and tested to tackle epidemiologically important pathogens, including<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0bacteria, fungi, viruses and mycobacteria.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A select few<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ousehold cleaners can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">also be effective against the full spectrum\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of pathogens, but typically have long contact times and\/or lack important emerging pathogens like MDROS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Candida\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">auris<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><strong>Q. As the EPA guidelines continue to be updated, how is that information shared throughout the hospital to ensure everyone is adhering to best practices?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Caitlin Stowe: With the continuously evolving guidance from the EPA and CDC, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t\u2019s crucial that there is a clear flow of information throughout the hospital to ensure staff members are informed of any changes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The most effective way to do this is to establish a clear channel of communication that has be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">en agreed upon by key members in the hospital.\u00a0\u00a0 This can include the marketing and communications department, the infection prevention team, and the leaders of the nursing and ancillary staff.\u00a0\u00a0 Having this communication channel\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">will allow for any new and pertinent information to be effectively communicated to those who need to know most in a timely manner.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. Along with using the right product, are there any particularly critical steps that people should follow to ensure they\u2019re getting the full effect of the formulation? (e.g. timing, ensuring the full surface is wet)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Caitlin Stowe: As with any product, in order to get the full use or effect, it\u2019s crucial to read the manufacturer\u2019s instructions for use- and this includes wipes as well! It\u2019s important to evaluate the surface <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and if it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">visibly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0soiled, you need to use at least one wipe to remove the visible soil and clean, and at least another separate, fresh wipe to perform the disinfection process.\u00a0 It\u2019s also important to ensure that you\u2019re using enough wipes for the task-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the surface\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">should be visibly wet after applying the wipes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, wet enough that it should take the entire contact time to dry.\u00a0 If the surface is drying before the stated contact time, it\u2019s important to re-wipe the surface to maintain wetness until the contact time has elapsed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once the surface is wet, make sure to leave it alone and untouched for the contact time.\u00a0 It\u2019s important to let the disinfectant do its\u2019 job and kill the bugs on the surface.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If\u00a0all of\u00a0these steps are followed, then you can feel confident that the surface or item is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">disinfected and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ready to use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Q<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <strong>When SARS-CoV-2 first emerged, a lot of the science and recommendations were \u2013 out of necessity \u2013 based on our knowledge of other coronaviruses. Now that we have more data and direct testing, does it spread and respond to disinfectants the way scientists originally predicted?&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">James Clayton: Research on how the virus responds to disinfect<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing chemistries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is in its infancy, however early data suggests that the virus is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">susceptible<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to disinfectants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scientists<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0predicted.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PDI\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">coul<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be one of the first companies to generate SARS-CoV-2 data on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">commercially<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0available products, which will provide a deeper understanding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of how the virus responds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. How exactly are the products tested against SARS-CoV-2?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">James Clayton: Testing the efficacy of disinfectants against a virus involves several steps. First, the lab will apply the virus to a surface and let it dry. Then, they will apply one of PDI\u2019s products to the surface, recover the liquid, put it back into cell culture, and test whether the virus is still infectious.
